WHAT IS CONTEMPORARY PILATES?
In order to explain what Contemporary Pilates is; we need to talk a little bit about Classical Pilates. Classical Pilates is a system created by Joseph H. Pilates and focuses on six main components: control, concentration, breathing, precision, flow and centre/core strength. Each of these elements is essential to the practice and ensures that the exercises you do will provide maximum benefits for your body.
While many people may think that Classical Pilates involves only mat work (working out on the floor), there are actually several other apparatus that can be used in training such as rings, weights and the magic circle (a large padded ring for stability).
Contemporary Pilates builds from Classical Pilates and integrates updated scientific knowledge of movement biomechanics. Contemporary Pilates focuses more on movement education rather than the classical order of exercises usually seen in Classical Pilates. It is also highly recommended to get an instructor's recommendation before using any kind of Pilates equipment or perform any difficult Pilates exercises. The best way to start in Pilates is with a class rather than at home or by yourself so that you get the proper guidance.
Contemporary Pilates classes offered at Dynamic Pilates in our Vancouver Studio are perfect for people who want to get toned and fit while still moving with precision and grace. Classes also help you develop strong mental habits that can improve focus and concentration both on your mat and off of it.
